Chapter Twelve

COOKIE WAS RIGHT ABOUT business slowing down. She sent Jennifer home early, and I was running the front counter while Chloe made another batch of chocolate chip cookies that probably weren’t going to get eaten. Well, I suppose we could eat them if it came down to it.

I watched all day as people walked past the shop. Some peered in the window as if we were a spectacle of some sort, with only a small handful of them stopping in now and then throughout the day to buy ice cream. Or ask for directions. It frustrated me. We were better than the other ice cream shop. Our creations were more creative, and we always gave a free cookie with each ice cream. So someone had been murdered with one of our cones? It’s not like we were going to murder everyone that bought one from us.

I was leaning against the front counter when Roy Franklin walked through the door. The green hair was hard to miss.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” I said, straightening up. “What can I help you with?”

He looked up at the menu board. “I’m not sure yet. I just got off work, and I was in the mood for some ice cream.” He grinned at me.

“Well, you came to the right place, then.” I was trying to sound chipper after feeling down all day, and I wasn’t sure I was succeeding.

“Hey, didn’t you come into the home improvement center the other day? You had a hole in your backyard fence. Right?”

I nodded, surprised that he remembered me. “Yeah, I did.”

“Did you ever come back and pick up that piece of lumber to fix your fence?”

I shook my head. “No, not yet. I’ve got to find a pickup truck to bring it home in.” Plus, the hole had been in the fence for something like six years. It’s not like there was any hurry. It was too small for my parent’s little dog to get through, so when they came home to visit, there was no worry there.

He nodded. “Yeah, well, as soon as you can find one, you be sure and come get that piece of lumber. The longer you wait to fix something like that, the worse it’s going to get. Like I said, we could deliver it, but it would cost forty dollars, and it probably isn’t worth it to you.”

I smiled. That hole was not getting worse. “I’ll keep that in mind. I’ve just been working so much that I haven’t had time to ask around.”

He nodded, his eyes going to the menu board again. “I think I’d like a triple scoop black cherry in a waffle cone with a drizzle of chocolate sauce.”

“That is a wise choice. You can’t beat cherries and chocolate.” I got to work scooping his cone and keeping an eye on him. I so wanted to ask him why he had lied about not knowing George Janson when Estelle said he knew him.

“Any news about that guy that got murdered?”

I glanced at him and shook my head.
